The Samburu of Kenya

Guy Needham

Studio 541
541 Mt Eden Road, Auckland

14 - 18 October 2020

Opening 15 October, 6pm

Guy Needham’s inquisitive worldview was shaped by growing up on the rural East Coast. Today he is mainly known for his work with indigenous tribes, primarily drawing on themes of identify and place within cultural narratives.

His pared-down style belies its complexity and his work is ultimately designed to challenge the viewer - self-questioning Western society's values and priorities in an age of more.

His images have been exhibited in New York, London, Tokyo, Barcelona, Athens, Moscow, Los Angeles and Sydney, and been seen on the pages of National Geographic Traveler, Lonely Planet, Get Lost, AFAR, International Traveler and the Royal Photographic Society’s Journal.

A member of the Royal Photographic Society, he also belongs to the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, the Los Angeles Center of Photography and the Photographic Society of New Zealand. The Exhibition: The Samburu are semi-nomadic pastoralists who live in the Rift Valley area of northern Kenya. In 2018 photographer Guy Needham spent time living with them under the scared mountain O’Lolokwe, where he learnt about the Moran - fierce warriors who still dress traditionally, hunt with spears, and drink blood from live goats.

This photographic exhibition is a tribute to the Samburu way of life, showcasing their colourful presence in light boxes and oversize images.
