This online-only auction presents an impressive photographic account of tangata whenua in the lead-up to the twentieth century. These photographs come from a single, private collection and are being presented to the market here for the very first time. The majority of the images were made using the albumen silver technique, which was the first commercially-viable method of producing prints from negatives. Major studios and photographers such as Burton Brothers, Josiah Martin, Pullman Studios, George Valentine, Stephen Thompson and James Partington are represented in the sale.
