Asher Milgate, Nestled between a Movie Set
Asher Milgate’s practice explores the layered intersections of memory, history, and identity, weaving together personal experience with broader cultural and historical narratives. His work delves into the tension between past and present, the visible and the unseen, constructing a dialogue that questions inherited histories and lived realities. Sewing emerges as a recurring motif, both as process and metaphor. The act of tearing, layering, and stitching mirrors the complexities of reconstructing fragmented histories, challenging notions of permanence and impermanence. Above/Below encapsulates Milgate’s meditations on these explorations and experiences while living in Devonport under the Maunga, Takarunga.
