Ardit Hoxha, Haniwa House

Labyrinth brings together the works of Ardit Hoxha and Theo Macdonald, produced during their 2024 Kōwhai Residencies in Tokyo, Japan.

The exhibition is grounded by a mutual interest in walking, urbanity, and the obsolesced. Drawn to the window display, Hoxha presents images of objects that are offered up for the pleasure of the viewing public. In this work, fragments of the storefront jostle with the displays of the museum, where the commodity meets history.

Macdonald explores the turbulent recent history of Tomioka, a town in the rural Fukushima Prefecture, and draws parallels to its sister city, Auckland. Beyond popular images of disaster and nuclear fallout, Macdonald gleans the landscape for new meaning.

Titled Labyrinth, this exhibition references a shared process of making, of navigating unknown built environments.

2024 Kōwhai Residency programme was made possible by Asia New Zealand Foundation Te Whītau Tūhon and kudos to our support programme partner in Japan, Tokyo Institute of Photography.
