Richard Young - Antarctica sea ice

Auckland Festival of Photography presents exclusively a suite of works from Antarctica by Richard Young, Wanaka based photographer as part of the Sustain [tautinei] theme.

Richard’s photographs invite you to take time to observe the Antarctic landscape. A place where everything is experienced differently as the cold and silence focus the senses and the mind. This world of white on white offers a simplicity that allows complexity to be understood. Is it “complexity within simplicity” or “simplicity within complexity”? Patterns within patterns build to form the greater Antarctic landscape; annually growing and shrinking as the sea ice forms and melts with the seasons. As the sea ice grows, the sea shrinks – as the sea shrinks, the sea ice grows. Everything is connected.

Views of New Zealand’s Ross Sea are presented in duality, allowing us to consider how Antarctica offers a global reference point capturing an ever changing world. Here the only consistency is change. Change being constant, but not always consistent. Richard is an Award winning photographer, his fine art prints have been widely exhibited and his work has been recognised in prestigious international photography awards. His recognition for creating exquisitely detailed fine-art prints has led him to work as an ambassador for Epson Printers. He also works with Nikon New Zealand as an official Nikon Creator—part of a global team of visionary artists exploring new ground.
